Maximum height and maximum light

Good introduction to medieval building techniques. Being a devoted admirer of Gothic cathedrals, this was one of the first books I red about the subject and it served well. If you wish to know why was pointed arch so important, or procedures used to erect butresses or types of scaffoldings used at that times... you will find the answers here. There is one drawback - it seems to me that author was repeating some ideas from the first half of the book in the second one, but still, it deserves 5 stars. Kind regards, Mario.

needs more figures and graphics. Assumes you already know what the different areas in a cathedral are called.

I've read about a third of this book so far, and I'm finding myself wishing the author had included more figures, sketches, and diagrams. There are already quite a few figures, sketches, and diagrams in it, but they lack callouts and arrows pointing to specific items of interest with a description, and they feel very disconnected from the text. The main reason I wish he had used even more sketches is that the author seems to assume the reader knows what all the parts of a cathedral are called. He randomly tosses out references to "triformiums" and "diaphragm wall" (there are lots of walls, which one is he considering the diaphragm wall?). The glossary at the back offers a written description of SOME of these confusing terms, but architecture and structural engineering are by nature graphical and visual fields... he needs an overall plan and section of a typical cathedral with each area and piece identified... a visual glossary. I've been so distracted trying to figure out what he is referring to that I haven't had a chance to evaluate anything else about his book.

To her usual successful mix of romance, humor, and spicy sex talk (think Wife of Bath with a pinch of dominatrix), the author of the Legacy trilogy (The Valentine Legacy, 1995, etc.) adds a rather substantial leavening of Disney-esque animal characters to a story set in 1277 England. They include Gilbert the castle goat, who gives milk and eats gauntlets; Edgar the Wolfhound (to whom Severin of Langthorne ties Hastings, his young wife, when he wants to humiliate her); Alfred, the huge housecat and familiar of Hastings's teacher, a recluse called the ``Healer'' who hates all men until she's smitten with Severin's man Gwent (``that lack-witted oxhead''); and Trist, the cute marten who cuddles beneath Severin's tunic. Besides comic relief, Trist's loving presence signifies to Hastings that the fierce-looking stranger to whom she's been betrothed isn't the scary warrior she first imagines. Severin has just returned from the Crusades to find his brother dead, his mother mad, and his estate penniless. With the blessing of King Edward, he has come to Oxborough Castle in East Anglia to wed Hastings, an heiress. He wants a sweet submissive wife who will give him an heir and leave him alone. Instead, he finds a strong-willed young woman well versed in self-preservation and herbal healing. (Borla root in ale makes a ``manhood'' flaccid; mugwort and primrose heal a swollen nose.) Beneath the usual conventions of the genre and some spirited good humor is Coulter's standard grim underpinning of domestic violence and marital rape--though this time, while not dispensing with them, she does suggest that men are not as deadly as they seem, especially if skillfully handled. Great Medival Read!!

Perhaps those that criticize this book do so not understanding the difference between the sexes during the medieval period and later regency times. I am not as fond of earlier period books but Rosehaven is to me an exception. I loved Severin and Hastings and found their romance very intriging and interesting - certainly not in any ways boring. For a couple that was thrown together in an arranged marriage - they both certainly came together in the end in such a loving and compelling manner - for that period of time it was a true love story. Catherine Coulter is one of the few authors that seems to have great loves stories both in modern times and in the past. She wins again for me with Rosehaven!!

Wow, it really was that bad

I saw all the horrible reviews and thought to myself "it can't really be that bad." But it was. This book is in no way, shape, or form a romance and I can not believe a self respecting woman (who based on some of her other work, is a very talented writer) actually wrote this. I can not write a review of this with out mentioning the rape, no not coercion, actual forcible rape, and the so called hero was never repentant about it, in fact he seemed to be quite proud. If that wasn't bad enough the "hero" continuously degraded and humiliated the "heroine." I understand it's a historical and at the time it is set, it was seen as perfectly OK for a man to treat his wife this way, but this is fiction. The author didn't have to make it this way. Not all romances have to light and frothy, there can and should be conflict, but this was ridiculous. This book is a feminist's nightmare. After the heroine is abused physically and emotionally by her husband, she finally gets a backbone and decides to leave, but every other female character in the book get together to convince her that not only is all of this her fault, but also that she should correct it by initiating sex with this man. Reading this book was like watching a train wreck, you know its bad and you really don't want to see it, but you have to keep looking anyway. I made it to the end of this book because I kept hoping that somehow these characters would do something to truly redeem themselves (although some things are unforgivable). Instead all we got was a fake HEA, there was no change of heart, no understanding of things done wrong, no admittance of guilt or remorse, just a near death experience and an abrupt I Love You from both parties. I have never in my life seen a character less deserving of a happy ending that Severin. Unless you want to be upset and disappointed I would not recommend reading this book, at all, ever, because yes it really is THAT bad.

Disturbing

What worries me with books like this one, is what impact they have on young women reading them and is given the impression that this is love.
Severin is a clear cut psychopath. When he rapes Hasting, he tell her she forced him to do it and he finds him self considerate that he use some cream so he don't rip her totally open. Note, nothing is ever his fault, no matter how bad he treats her, the clear mark of a psychopath.
Regarding Hasting, well is that really love or Stockholm syndrome? Her ladies is naturally a product of their time and enablers for Severins abuse. Only one with lick of sense is the Healer. And the most charming creatures are Trist the marten and Severins mother.
The two second in command Gwent and , also seem to have way more sense and respect for women then their commanders Severin and Sir Richard. No idea why Gwent is described as lack witted. He seems to have a EQ mile above his master.
Some of the rewires criticize Hastings attempt to harm her husband and her rebellion against him. Personally I wished she bashed his brain in with a mace every second page.

About the Author

Lori Thein Brody, PT, PhD, SCS, ATC, is a senior physical therapist in Madison, Wisconsin. Her aquatic therapy experience includes nearly 20 years of treating a variety of patients. Brody is a frequent contributor to the body of knowledge in rehabilitation, including a popular text on therapeutic exercise, teaching continuing education courses, and providing postprofessional coursework.

Brody received the Ron Peyton Award in 2006 for sports physical therapy. In her leisure time, she enjoys swimming, running, biking, and snowshoeing.

Paula Richley Geigle, PT, PhD, is an assistant professor in the department of physical therapy and rehabilitation science at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Geigle's 27 years of clinical practice as a generalist includes aquatic intervention. Part of her research agenda focuses on incorporating aquatic exercise to manage the negative health outcomes of cancer and aging.

Geigle is past president of the Aquatic Physical Therapy Section of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and served as coeditor of the Journal of Aquatic Physical Therapy. She received the Outstanding Research Award in 2006 from the Aquatic Physical Therapy Section of the APTA. In her spare time she plays tennis, hikes with her golden retrievers, and reads.

Too Much Techno Speak

I have led high-quality, aquatic-exercise classes for the past 13 years with participants ranging in age from teenagers to ninety-year-olds. Consequently I have attended many seminars and read many books and articles on the subject but NEVER have I read a book so completely and frustratingly difficult to comprehend. I've had to wade through so much techno speak and so many acronymns that I've often lost track of the main thought. I've found myself having to read and reread paragraphs and pages and chapters just to try to glean some kernel of useful information I could bring to my classes. NOTE TO THE EDITOR. . .this book could probably have been condensed to 100, maybe 200 pages, if written in a clearer, less technical, more user-friendly writing style. NOTE TO ANY PROSPECTIVE BUYER. . .if you are looking for a book that will help you improve your aquatic exercise classes, look elsewhere.

Of course, i totally recommend that you go to one of the ATRI or any other credited organizations conference to be able to have a complete understanding of the Aquatic Therapy. Andreas Madsen fue un dan�s que conoci� la Patagonia en oportunidad de la demarcaci�n del Laudo arbitral del rey Eduardo VII. Fue uno de los peones que particip� en la erecci�n del hito 62 en la costa sur del lago San Martin en el a�o 1903. Luego se instal� un poco m�s al sur, en su "estancia", a la que llam� Fitz Roy. Form� una familia y all� se encuentra todav�a, enterrado al pie del monte Fitz Roy. Fue el cronista de la vida en esa zona y de sus primeros habitantes. Las historias y los personajes forman parte de una historia todav�a no escrita de la provincia argentina de Santa Cruz. Localizarlos y seguir su historia y los misterios que las rodean es uno de los principales desaf�os que presenta este libro. Vayan como ejemplos el caso de Fred Otten (�taxidermista o heredero al trono del Imperio Austro-h�ngaro?) y el de Ascensio Brunel. Esta es una de las principales virtudes de este libro: contiene relatos que son el inicio de historias no contadas, que adem�s se ven enriquecidos por los editados junto a Bertomeu bajo el t�tulo "Cazando Pumas en la Patagonia", en 1956.
