This book is well worth reading.

"Thirty Years" is well worth reading not only for those looking for an "insider" history of the Jehovah's Witnesses, but also for those interested in spiritual narratives in general. Schnell, clearly a man of integrity and strong spiritual feelings, experienced his time as a member of this millennial group -- during the formative and crucial years between the end of the bible students and the creation of the theocratic Jehovah's Witnesses -- as a painful struggle away from and then back to God. It is well written and a good, quick read, and the determinedly personal tone Schnell takes gives it a truly human flavor. It gives great insight into the personal experiences of living in a religion that is moving away from individual conscience and towards totalitarian conformity. I highly recommend it.

Spied On, Blackmailed Zone Branch Overseer

William Schnell went from being a Jehovah's Witness in Germany to the later position of a Zone Overseer (then sometimes called Zone Servant), a position over the more regional Circuit Overseers.

As evidence of the powerful expose that this work constitutes, it relates for example that in the U.S. Joseph Rutherford, the then President of the Watchtower Society directing JWs, once called him into his office and pulled out files kept on his activities including accusations of kissing some of the girl JWs.

Schnell also tells how once aware that he was being tailed and spied on, evidently also at Joe's direction by other JWs at the world headquarters called Bethel in Brooklyn, New York, he then made use of that fact and led them on "a merry chase."

Years ago when I first read this book I thought like some other commentators that it was simply made-up or over-blown sour grapes. However, since being a JW from about 1978-2001 I have reviewed it yet again and find it jives perfectly with what I observed, heard and felt as well as comments from a number of other writers in the area of JW literature.

For instance, if I had taken it more seriously at the time I would not have gotten caught up with this cult which from silentlambs.org (also there see NBC and CBS transcripts) we now know has been having local elders send "repentant" child molesters preaching door-to-door alongside very decent, unsuspecting JW parents and their children!

Again, Schnell's book remains a short but extremely powerful work, a truly classical expose in the literature.

Somewhat dated, but still the BEST book on J.W.s!

This remains the best book available that deals with this hidden nature of the Watchtower Society. Some would argue that it has become badly dated, and there is some truth in that contention, as the Society has changed in many ways since Schnell was involved.
What is remarkable, though, is Schnell's insight into the basic J.W. mindset, which has changed not a WHIT! In fact, in a particularly vivid scene in this book, Schnell approaches his Watchtower "elders" with an inquiry as to why Society money is NEVER spent to help the poor and sick in the spirit of the New Testament scriptures. The frustrated, blame-shifting reply from these Pharisses is identical to the one I recieved from a "door-knocker" just months ago.
Also, Schnell is correct that the key to the Society's earthly, fleshly success is not in its stand on "scripture only" as some have assumed, but in its virulent trumping of the "God's-ONLY-organization-on-earth" lie. He is futher correct that this altogether mystical and un-biblical assumption of "Brooklyn-as-Zion" and all its attendant apostacy is THE Achilles heel of the average Graceless, mindlessly legalistic, door-knocking "slave" on the rolls. These poor, hapless creatures are sent, not to the drunkards, down-trodden and hopeless (in whom the organization has little or no interest) but to the doors of professing Bible believers ONLY, that they might gain weak minds already predisposed to submit to harsh "biblical authority."
I praise God for Schnell and his testimony and pray that people will find and read this book.

I am new to Reiki, having a million and one questions about the healing energy and how to use it. My main focus is helping animals with Reiki, but this book is a wonderful resource, filled with information that helps you understand Reiki, understand the attunements, and gives you lots of information about practicing Reiki. I enjoyed the additional uses information, such as giving Reiki to your plants, trees, appliances, and lots of other things. I plan on trying some of these additional uses along with practicing Reiki on myself and family and friends. If you are looking for a great resource, then get this book! You will not be disappointed.

The Best Reiki book -- hands down!

Before and after being Reiki atuned, I have read many books on Reiki from the library. In my opinion of all the books I read, Reiki for Life by Penelope Quest was the best. This book explained the techniques and is helpful in creating one's own techniques. This is the book on Reiki I am now purchasing to keep in my library for reference.

Great read for anyone interested in Reiki

Rented this book from our local library and loved it so much I had to purchase my own copy. I'm newly certified in Reiki Level 1 and have found energy work fascinating! This book was very informative and full of great explanations of what Reiki is all about, and the process it takes to become a Reiki practitioner right up through becoming a Master. Would use this book to go back & reference the different hand positions and other useful information. I will definitely pursue Reiki Level 2 and use this book as a guide to help learn the sequence of using the symbols & memorizing the mantras as well as the techniques based on the Usui teachings.

It Feels Incomplete

I hesitated to review this book several weeks after I read it because I knew I wouldn't be able to give Chaplin 5 stars. He's an amazing author and the book is wonderful but as detailed as it was in certain areas, it felt incomplete in others. However, he shares some valuable information about his times, not just his personal life, which I'm grateful for and I could relate to some of his experiences 'cause certain things are universal. It's just that he spent a lot of time writing about women than was necessary. As someone who wanted lots of inside information about his life as well as his films, it was not balanced. But I learnt that there's a biographer that his wife showed certain materials to after his death and there's more information in his book than this one. For all who are interested, it's David Robinson's Chaplin: His Life and Art, which I can't wait to read. I still recommend this book to all because there's nothing like reading from the person in question. It's priceless and has a personal touch that I wouldn't trade for anything in this world, but since it feels a bit incomplete I'll also recommend the book I mentioned earlier.

My perspective was widened, but not appreciably, and for that reason, I cannot rate the book any higher. Chaplin gives great detail about his impoverished boyhood, but slides into a long litany of the world's greats with whom he palavered once he'd made his impact. Names, names, and more names, but no real depth about what any of them meant to him (except Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford). Even his half-brother Sid gets short shrift. Therefore, to that extent, the book is very disappointing. Chaplin must have had reasons to bypass so much of what we fans would like to have been told. I don't pretend to know, but I will not be using the book for any reference or bothering to pick it up again.

A Must Read

Fascinating to learn about his childhood. Although his childhood takes up slightly more than one third of the book I could not put the book down. He explains his process for writing, directing, producing, composing, etc.. A little too much name dropping, but I guess he had the right to be so proud of keeping company with Einstein, Churchill, Kings, etc. I now realize that many classic comedy routines actually came from Chaplin, for example the candy assembly line where Lucy couldn't keep up. That came from Chaplin. In all an amazing read.

About the Author

G. E. Frazier, CHC, is a certified health coach and graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. He holds a BS in accounting from San Diego State University and was a tax accountant for forty-three years. Now, instead of researching tax law, he researches health and wellness. He practices in San Diego, where he lives with his loving wife, Melanie.

On November 17, 2011, Frazier was diagnosed with diabetes. However, refusing to accept that diagnosis, he discovered his true condition as “dawn phenomenon,” and cured his diabetes in nine weeks. Great information. The author tell his story discovering he was diabetic. I recomend this book to all, especially those who are diabetic. The author gives great information for not living on sythentic drugs, but using more natural approach. Great reading , very interesting, you won't want to put it down

A compelling and personal tale laced with wisdom that takes one through a process of questioning the institutional status quo as well as the practice of treating the "symptoms" of disease based on the theory that *disease causes poor health* when in reality it's the opposite, there's so much more to the picture in treating the patient as whole with the theory that *poor health causes disease* and we all don't fit into the same mold. G. E. Frazier has a remarkable ability to take complex research and distill from it what would be important and interesting for a lay audience. An immensely important book. Many health books can be dull and drone on with a spattering of useful or interesting chapters. Not so here. The entire span of this unauthorized autobiography of happiness and well being is fascinating and applicable to day-to-day life. Everyone should read The Dawn Phenomenon.

He had me from the acknowledgments! GE Frazier is a story teller! GREAT READ!! There are health books that are challenging to read, as they feel like a science textbook...as in dry and wordy. This book is entertaining, while at the same time incredibly educational and enlightening. If you are experiencing a diagnosis of diabetes, you need to read this book. If you are hoping to learn from someone else's journey so you don't have to get a diabetes diagnosis, you need to read this book. Mr. Frazier makes an excellent case for a plan that can take you from diabetes to super wellness in a lighthearted, yet profound and life-changing way.

Blowers identifies what he terms Maximus's "cosmo-politeian" worldview, a contemplative and ascetical vision of the participation of all created beings in the novel politeia, or reordered existence, inaugurated by Christ's "new theandric energy". Paul M. Blowers holds the Ph.D. in patristics and early Christian studies from the University of Notre Dame, and since 1989 has taught church history and historical theology at Emmanuel Christian Seminary in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he is currently the Dean E. Walker Professor of Church History. He is principally a scholar of Greek and Byzantine patristics, and particularly of the theology of Maximus the Confessor, but he has also taught broadly in the field of church history and Christian thought. He is a Past President of the North American Patristics Society and is currently an Associate Editor of the Journal of Early Christian Studies. Author, editor, or translator of six books in early church history, he has published numerous journal articles.

This book is a fantastic, well researched reference with everything one would want to know about the NFL, AFL, and AAFC schedules from the beginning. Only thing missing is the schedules for the WFL and USFL. They too were professional football and not minor league. The USFL was pretty consistent and wouldn't be too much of a challenge for its four schedules (yes they did release a schedule for a 1986 season that was never played). The WFL however for its season and a half had teams folding (two in the first season, one in the second) and moving in mid season (two in first season) . It would be a little more of a challenge to figure out
its scheduling. I would recommend this book to anyone at all interested in Pro Football history.

This is the first book ever to examine the scheduling patterns in any sports league, and it solves the mystery of how and why a team's opponents were picked by the NFL. Best of all, this story of sports, history, politics and mathematics is recounted in an interesting way, and it sets the standard by which future studies will be made.

Highly recommended reference material!

I recommend this book for every pro football fan, academic and historian; the easy to understand and accurate compilation of reference materials in a single location makes this a must-have. Also; the scheduling formulas make sense of what to some may have been a mysterious process: it shows that competition in professional football is logical and based on the rule of the game - really a great book.

The Nineties With A Vengeance

A NEW HYMNAL FOR COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS (1992) is an odd pew hymnal and if anything, its pecularities have become more apparent in the over 20 years since its introduction. Layout is bland, with common names of hymns titled only slightly larger (and not emphasized) than the overall proceedings. The not-quite-complete chanted Psalter (hymnodists must hate Psalm 49!) intrudes partway into the hymns for no reason of logic or sequence I could discover and is followed by some sung Psalms in regular layout. The 575 hymnic entries are an unimpressive total considering that the Psalms included and even the antiphon for them are part of the count. There was no room in this book for "Brightest and Best of the Sons of the Morning," "Let All Things Now Living," "In the Bleak Midwinter," "All Things Bright and Beautiful," or "O Little Town of Bethlehem" using the more common tune setting ST. LOUIS. Yet there is room for some odd incursions, apparently under the name of inclusiveness: "Who is She, neither male nor female?" asks no. 15, apparently unaware that the first three words made the rhetorical question unnecessary and impossible. "Guide Me, O, Thou Great Jehovah" was rewritten to "Guide Me Ever, Great Redeemer"; yet to me it is just as archaic to use "ever" to mean "always" as it was to strike the pronoun "Thou." The retail price of this book is outlandish (at this time, $38.00) and for that amount of money one could buy two of almost any denominational hymnal, or three of most nondenominational hymnals, any of which are more likely to serve.

The Book is Like Compound-W for Worry Warts

Dale Carnegie wrote some great books back in the 30's and 40's, and this book is one of them- Carnegie fans won't be disappointed.

The writing style is classic Carnegie. To put it simply, the guy just writes like he talks. This makes for a very friendly and easy to understand book, rather like a good friend giving you a piece of advice.

And a lot of advice he gives. The book is divided up into ten sections, each one tackling some aspect of worrying. I could give you a rundown of the topics, but you don't really need me to repeat the table on contents to decide if you want to read the book. Rather, let me just say that book covers just about every major "worry issue" that might be causing a troubled mind, such as your work, your finances, other people's criticisms- and them some.

While there are no earth-shattering, never-before-seen tips in the book, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend it to anyone who is looking to ease their mind a bit. That's because it does a GREAT job of conveying simple wisdom that really make you think good and hard about why you're worrying and if those things are really worth worrying about at all.

In short, its a bestseller because it makes a lot of sense and its advice can do a lot to re-frame your thinking about things. And if you can re-frame your thinking, well, you've about found the best "Compound-W" for worry warts. Readers who enjoyed this book might also enjoy "Finding Happiness in a Frustrating World".

In many ways, just what the doctor ordered

If "How to Win Friends..." was about interpersonal skills, this book is about intrapersonal skills. People have criticized Dale for stating the obvious, but hey, as my mother says, "common sense isn't common." Most of these ideas run counter to human nature's way of responding to conflict and criticism (defensiveness, blame, guilt, self-righteousness, etc). Instead, we are invited to replace these typical responses with non-threatening admissions of having been in the wrong if indeed we were in the wrong or water-off-a-duck's back/unshaken poise if the criticism was unjust, unwarranted, and unreasonable. To be honest, I often haven't thought about things the way Dale states them much less practiced his principles with consistency. Self-improvement in terms of handling my feelings is still a long-term goal of mine. I've made good progress, but I have a ways to go.

I think this book is very good, but I think "How to Win Friends & Influence People" is the better of the two books. Also, Dale can come off as preachy at times. I think he was a wonderful, considerate person with the best of intentions, so I hesitate reproaching this "guru" of emotional intelligence.

I did enjoy listening to stories about personal transformation. People who had hit rock bottom were able to rebound from their falls. John D. Rockefeller turned his life around, much in the style of "Silas Marner," and no longer fretted about losing money. Thanks to his Rockefeller Foundation, countless good causes have had ample funding. I also like the story Dale shares about J. C. Penney. Penney felt that even his intimate loved ones believed the worst about him after he was implicated with the stock market crash of 1929. He became so worried that his health deteriorated. Then one day he stumbled into a chapel as the choir was singing, "God will take care of you." He recognized the truth of those words and within 20 minutes, snapped out of his despair.

Dale really revered Abraham Lincoln, and so do I, based on Dale's account of him. Abraham Lincoln would select men who disliked him if he thought those men were the best qualified for a given position. Someone asked Lincoln why he would consort with men who freely criticize him. Lincoln responded, "You have more of a feeling of personal resentment than I have. Perhaps I have too little of it. But I never thought it paid." He also said, "A man doesn't have the time to spend half his life in quarrels. If any man ceases to attack me, I never remember the past against him." Wow! Those are the words of an enlightened and secure human being.

I think that my problem has been that I took too personally the criticism of others (both just and unjust). I'm not a vindictive person; however, I hate feeling threatened, and my self-esteem--while it has improved, it is still vulnerable. It was the feeling of self-doubt that I hated--not really the person attacking me. I made the mistake of interchanging a person for his or her mistakes at my expense. If you no longer feel threatened by criticism and believe in yourself and your potential no matter what, then I think forgiveness is easy and natural. Dale warned that we pay too dearly for grudges with our lost peace of mind.

I like how this book among others can give us the tools to completely overhaul our unhelpful (or rather hurtful) ways of thinking about things. "How to Stop Worrying..." revisits platitudes and shows how they are less trite sayings than distilled truths. Turn lemons into lemonade. Count your blessings. Don't cry over spilled milk. He also talked about putting a "stop-loss order" on resentments, having our thoughts work for instead of against us, and how knowledge isn't power until it is applied. Forgive and forget our enemies. No person can humiliate or disturb us; a person really humiliates him/herself when s/he attempts to humiliate others. Or Eleanor Roosevelt's insight that no one can make us feel inferior without our permission. "If possible, no animosity should be felt for anyone." Edith Cabbal: "I realize now that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness toward anyone." "Everynight I forgive everything & everybody." "Forget yourself by becoming interested in others." "Serving others is a sure way to forget our own troubles." "We hurt ourselves with thoughts of revenge." "Sympathy and compassion are the best antidotes to enmity."

The helpful quotes go on and on, and any of the above could become a person's mantra, depending on what issues s/he is working on. Ben Franklin had the great idea of working on one of his eight severest character flaws every week. He would alternate what vice he was trying to eliminate or at least, ameliorate. He would self-reflect upon his improvement or lack thereof. I've decided to imitate good old Ben and try this for myself.

I am grateful for Dale Carnegie and other helpful emotional intelligence gurus (Wayne Dyer, Deepak Choprah, and David Burns come to mind) for spelling out tools for emotional health and personal transformation. We all have great potential. As Dale said, we all live well within our means in terms of intellectual and emotional intelligence. Financially, it's great advice to live within our means, but we pay dearly to do so intellectually or emotionally.

About the Author
Margaret Nutting Ralph is secretary of educational ministries for the Roman Catholic diocese of Lexington, Kentucky, and director of the masters degree programs for Roman Catholics at Lexington Theological Seminary. She is the author of eight books on Scripture and has given workshops on Scripture throughout the U.S. and in Canada.

Saving people from mis-information

I have heard several people say that they felt great conflict in their religious lives and that learning about the bible from Dr. Ralph turned them around. Dr. Ralph helped them come to terms with the misinformation or mis-interpretation they've been suffering from. Dr. Ralph's views are not her own. This approach to scripture is not something new. In fact, it is the contextualist approach to scripture that the Catholic Church teaches and has been teaching for years.

Enlightening and easy reading.

Margaret Nutting Ralph is a teacher and gifted wordsmith. She expresses herself so well and it's no surprise that she understands how others use words. I have been studying and teaching religious education for the last seven years. I found this book gave me great insight into the Bible and explained some of those little mysteries I never understood. When the loving God you believe in says some of the frightening things in the Bible, Dr. Ralph explains why it comes out that way and what it really means. I would recommend this book to everyone interested in the Bible. If you get a chance to hear her speak she is a dynamic speaker, too.
