About the Author

Michael Allingham is a Fellow and the Senior Tutor at Magdalen College, Oxford. He read natural philosophy and then political economy at the University of Edinburgh and subsequently taught at a number of universities in the United Kingdom and the United States; he has also held visiting positions at universities in Italy, France and Austria. His previous books include Equilibrium and Disequilibrium, General Equilibrium, Value, Unconscious Contracts, Theory of Markets, and Rational Choice.

An introduction, but not for the real novice

"Short and to the point" describes the book perfectly, but what is the point? More specifically, to whom is it introducing the subject.

I found the book a good description of the logic behind choice theory; on what are the numerous different bases on which we can build a "theory" of choice; and where this can lead. From the simplest ideas of choice we are led to Arrow's Impossibility Theorem and so can see that "rational" choices may not satisfy everyone in a democracy - a result that needs to be known at all levels of a polity.

However it's supposed to be an introduction. If you're someone not used to using logic there are too many slippery areas where you'll get lost, even though the author tries to ground the work in reality - sometimes successfully, sometimes not. And for someone who wants to see more of the practical implications it is a pity that these are not explicated more.

This book will suit some as an introduction, but not all.

Poor synopsis

If this book is supposed to give us a view of what is current and important in choice theory, it fails completely. It is hard to understand why it was included in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series, which is generally very good and sometimes remarkable. Just read Tim Gowers' book on Mathematics - enthralling!

First, its tone is inappropriate, in the sense that it states controversial things (remember, this is an introductory book) in a authoritarian manner. This style may go well with undergraduates, with whom unbalanced rants backed by very flimsy evidence will go unchallenged for fear of bad grades. For the rest of the world that does not depend on Mr. Allingham's goodwill and hopefully sunny disposition, it is singularly unpersuasive. It reads like robber-baron, Wall-Street/City of London capitalist propaganda, which is neither better nor more truthful than peasants-with-pitchforks Communist propaganda.

Second, it fails to take into consideration recent and not-so-recent advances in decision theory. Humans and animals are often irrational and have a very limited computational power. Thus models which assume rationality, perfect information and unlimited computational capacity are of little or no use. While perhaps interesting as intellectual exercises, they are useless in describing the real world. If you want to smell a rat, look in the pages of books like this - if it mainly deals with a "rational agent", any such book may be safely disregarded. The "rational agent" assumption, together with the assumption of gaussian probability distributions, have given the world a large number of horrible planning failures, from world wars to, most recently, the crippling of world economy by "talented" bankers, Mobutu-style kleptocrats who rake state-backed millions in bonuses after bankrupting everybody.

Third, something positive. While some of the author's assertions are wrong, they also are hilarious and thus provide good (if perhaps unintended) entertainment value. For example, the author states something to the effect that a certain amount of money means the same thing to someone who has a lot of money and to someone who does not. This assertion is so that it highlights his distaste for progressive taxation. So if you lose 10 dollars and you have 1,000,000, the loss causes the same pain as it would to a pauper who only has 100. Very convincing, isn't it? In reality, the perception of sensory stimuli and numerical quantities is ruled by the Weber-Fechner law, which states that quantities are perceived relative to the baseline and for which overwhelming experimental and observational evidence exists. In other words, a loss of 10 dollars for the 100 dollars pauper is approximated by a loss of 100,000 for the millionaire. Yet you wouldn't learn it from this book. The Weber-Fechner law has been formulated in the 19th century - who knows, news may travel slowly from Germany to England.

For decision theory books that actually do apply to real decision-making, it is much better to read Daniel Kahneman & Amos Tversky, Howard Raiffa & John Pratt & Robert Schlaifer, Paul Glimcher, Sheena Iyengar, Dan Ariely, Barry Schawartz, Jonah Lehrer. These books have various lengths, areas of emphasis and levels of mathematical treatment, yet none falls into the category of this introduction. Hopefully they will satisfy your needs and intellectual curiosity. This book has no place alongside them.

Perplexed

I went to this book hoping to find a good overview of the current state of choice theory. And it may be in there somewhere. But having read every word I feel none the wiser. Analyze particular sentences and paragraphs, even pages and they seem quite clear. But I kept feeling: so what? I read the section on the Prisoner's Dilemma (something central to my field of conflict) and it left me with only a vague sense of what was going on.

Moreover, each time some of the theory mapped down into the real world of actually choosing, actually making a decision, or in building a political perspective about democracy or income distribution, it didn't seem to compute. Sample: 'Under democracy it will always be in the interests of the majority to oppress the minority. An example here is to be found in bans on country sports.' Apart from the fact that his example will be meaningless outside the UK, there is nothing in the previous paragraphs to justify this blunt assertion, that seems empirically extremely doubtful. I am a minority in reading lots of books, or in kayaking, or liking the novels of Anthony Powell and I feel no oppression from any majority. All of us are minorities in some perhaps the majority of respects, and I doubt that most of us in most situations feel oppressed.

I suspect that Michael Allingham (like most of us) has a definite set of political views: probably strong free market, authoritarian/libertarian (i.e. not without contradictions), and very comfortable with extreme income inequality. But I found that the step from Choice Theory to the implications he draws was just too large a leap of logic. He has simply projected his own belief systems into his real world conclusions and left me behind in the chain of logic stakes.

I am left profoundly disappointed that Choice Theory, that sounds like it might be helpful to the tough choices we are faced as a society, either does not have anything interesting to contribute or Michael Allingham's spin on it is profoundly unhelpful. I will now start the search to see if there is a better short introduction to this field that maps more usefully to choices in the real world. And that speaks to the audience in a more empathetic way. There is never any sense that this book has been subject to any push back from people who might not share his views, either on Choice Theory or the implications he has drawn. Surely his students at Oxford should have torn some of his logic and implications to pieces and lead to some re-writing? Created some cognizance of alternative perspectives? Of has the 'short' format made him delete the alternative arguments?

This is the most disappointing of the 20+ Very Short Introductions that I have read so far, the vast majority of which I would rate as 4 or 5 star.

I would welcome some comment or alternative perspective on this book in case I am missing something useful and I am open to being mistaken.

Great guide for Porto.

This guide includes a great itinerary for visiting Porto in three days. I followed the plan and advices while in Porto and had a great time. I just selected a more expensive hotel than the one suggested.. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Vinayak Bharne is an urbanism and planning joint adjunct faculty member at the Sol Price School of Public Policy and the School of Architecture at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles; and the director of design at Moule and Polyzoides Architects and Urbanists. He is the editor of The Emerging Asian City Concomitant Urbanities and Urbanisms (2012), and the contributing author of several books including Planning Los Angeles (2012) and Aesthetics of Sustainable Architecture (2011). Krupali Krusche is a preservation and architecture faculty member at the University of Notre Dame. As the head of the DHARMA (Digital Historic Architectural Research and Material Analysis) research team, specializing in 3D documentation of World Heritage Sites, she has studied and documented key monuments including the tombs and gardens along the Yamuna River in India, and the Roman Forum in Italy.

A book that can make you curious is a good book. But a book that can anticipate the curiosity and answer your questions, that's a fabulous book !

What I like most about it is the simplicity in its words and illustrations - they are to the point and clear. The author has written it in a way that allows the reader (scholar or new to the subject) to journey through architecture of hindu temples and their urban contexts. The fact that the author has addressed even the smallest of shrines- idols under trees or rocks- is very unique and it gives the reader a different perspective to sacred India.

I would recommend this to readers who are interested in the topic.

The reason one should read this book is because it is not just another book on Hindu Temples. It talks about the conjuncture of temples and the temple towns. It also shows the importance of the temple culture in India and how cities nurture this culture.
All in all a must read coffee table book!

Out of Print, But Still Available

This book was unique when it was first published in 1969. In that dat, the author knew much of what he claimed would not be believed, therefore it is illustrated with actual pages from the patent applications for many of the inventions discussed.
It is no longer available . . . under this name. This same book, however, can be found under its new name -- African-American Inventors, ISBN 0894203444.

Kindle is not grad school friendly

I bought all my books in e book form, four from kindle and seven on a different app. I originally bought this book in kindle because it was less expensive but it was a huge mistake. The lack of page numbers is a huge problem and the missing tables, figures, and information is ridiculous. The "Loc" numbers aren't consistent by any means either. I could site a page, look through other chapters, then go back to the Loc I cited and the info I had originally sited was no longer there. It had moved. I never again will buy a book from kindle.

Very poor picture quality, good information

Terribly disappointed in this book, I found a far superior version of this ebook on inkling with better pictures and search options. Come on Kindle, you should be the market leader in ebooks. I should be able to expect the best quality available, not this disappointingly fuzzy, poorly searchable second rate product.
The book is a good book in the print version but unless kindle can do much better than this I would stay away from the kindle edition.

Great textbook, just don't get it on kindle

I really like this textbook, but don't get the kindle edition. I was not able to effectively search within the textbook. Page numbers were not written on the pages. Fortunately I received a free refund from Amazon and ordered a print copy.

About the Author
Leonard J. Brooks is Professor of Business Ethics & Accounting at the Rotman School of Management of the University of Toronto. He is Executive Director of the Clarkson Centre for Business Ethics & Board Effectiveness, Director of the Professional Accounting Centre, the Master of Management & Professional Accounting Program, and the Master of Forensic Accounting Program (formerly the Diploma in Investigative & Forensic Accounting Program). Professor Brooks served 14 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Business Ethics and as Founding Editor of Corporate Ethics Monitor, a pioneering bimonthly publication. He has published articles on ethics issues in the Journal of Business Ethics, Accounting Organizations and Society, Canadian Accounting Perspectives, and Business & Society. He authored BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FOR ACCOUNTANTS, 2E; ETHICS & GOVERNANCE: DEVELOPING AND MAINTAINING AN ETHICAL CORPORATE CULTURE, 4E; and PRINCIPLES OF STAKEHOLDER MANAGEMENT: THE CLARKSON PRINCIPLES. Professor Brooks also authored/edited the research monograph CANADIAN CORPORATE SOCIAL PERFORMANCE. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, he obtained his CA designation (in 1970) and subsequently became an audit manager and Director of Manpower for Touche Ross & Co. (now Deloitte) in Toronto. Professor Brooks served as a member, then chair, of the Chartered Accountants' national Board of Examiners and chair of its national Syllabus Committee. He was named a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (FCA) of Ontario in 1982. These professional designations were converted to CPA and FCPA in 2012. He consults with individuals, corporations, governmental and non-governmental organizations and serves as an expert witness and frequent media-commentator. Professor Brooks is also a former director of the Canadian Centre for Ethics & Corporate Policy and a former president of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association.

Paul Dunn is an Associate Professor of Business Ethics and the Chair of the Organizational Behaviour, Human Resources, Entrepreneurship and Ethics department at the Goodman School of Business, Brock University. Dr. Dunn holds two degrees in philosophy: a bachelor's and a master's, both from the University of Toronto. He also holds a doctorate in accounting from Boston University. He is also a CPA and was a practicing chartered accountant in downtown Toronto for a dozen years. Dr. Dunn's research focuses on corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. His work has been published in a variety of scholarly journals, including Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Management, Business & Society, Journal of Management and Governance and Business Ethics Quarterly. He sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Business Ethics and Business & Society and is an active review more than a half-dozen other scholarly journals. He is the Treasurer of the Social Issues in Management division of the Academy of Management as well as serving as the Treasurer for the Society for Business Ethics. He has been interviewed on TV, the radio, and in the press in Canada, the United States and Sweden.

About the Author
About the Author Roxanne Small is a registered physical therapist with over 35 years of experience in pediatrics. Her career has included working in hospitals, schools, homes, and clinics. Roxanne teaches a course in "Developmental Environments" to health care professionals working in the field of early intervention. She and her teaching partner, Julie Erbaugh, PT also teach professional seminars regarding Chronologically Controlled Developmental Therapy. In addition, Roxanne has been a guest speaker at conventions and meetings, speaking on topics relating to sensory-motor foundations in children. The first edition of Building Babies Better was published in 2005. Roxanne has more than 25 years of first-hand experience as a parent. Roxanne and her husband, Gary, have three children, all of whom have been the motivation and impetus for Building Babies Better.

Good ideas, although some are a little overboard. Reccomed by my daughters occupationAL therapist, but she said to take some of the activities with a grain of salt. Such as.... not to put my baby on the floor covered in oil to play.

This book is an excellent resource for birth parents, adoptive parents, parents of children with disabilities, nannies, teachers and caregivers alike. The activities are clear and simple, easy to add in to your regular routines and play times. This second edition is a lovely upgrade to the first. Endless benefits of interactive facilitation of proper physical development. I give it as a shower gift to every expecting parent!

This relationship, the book argues, is exemplified by the work of Trevor Horn, who is widely acknowledged as one of the most important, innovative and successful British pop record producers of the early 1980s. In the first part of the book, Timothy Warner presents a definition of pop as distinct from British rock music, and goes on to consider the equipment and working practices that result in the specific characteristics of pop music. Part two analyses seven influential recordings produced by Trevor Horn between 1979 and 1985, revealing how the creative use of technology in the modern pop recording studio has informed Horn's work. These analyses highlight the challenges that pop music poses to the music analyst.

Definitely a 'must'

Pop Music, Technology and Creativity is the most original and wide-ranging book on pop music I have ever read. While focusing on the use of technology, which Warner considers to be one of the distinctive traits of pop music, this book is obviously not intended for the � techies �. Warner is careful to avoid all unnecessary jargon, and technology is always discussed in terms of its creative potential - never in a vacuum.
One of the many strengths of this extremely well informed book is that pop music is seen as a complex and multifaceted artefact produced by people who are both commercially aware and aesthetically motivated. Trevor Horn is a particularly good example of this, as confirmed by the long interview with him that concludes the book.
But this is not a book about Trevor Horn; it is about pop music and British pop music in particular. The seven recordings carefully analysed by Warner serve to highlight one or more interesting aspects of pop such as: the way in which the complexity of the production techniques can be reflected in the lyrics (`Video Killed the Radio Star'); scratching and sampling, and all their implications (McLaren's `Buffalo Gals'); the interaction between performer and producer (`Owner of a Lonely Heart'); the use of repetition and the importance of remixes (`Relax'); the manipulation of timbre and space (Who's afraid of the Art of Noise) ; the merits of the sequencer (Propaganda) ; the use of the Fairlight (Slave to the Rhythm), etc.
Far from being a narrow, self-contained, unit, each of the analytical chapters echoes and/or develops points touched upon previously. Furthermore Warner is always happy to elaborate on the wider musical implications of the points he makes and never ignores the visual or cultural aspects of the final product.
The result is a rich, subtle and multifaceted book which I found well written, informative, full of surprises and highly stimulating. Definitely a `must'.

90% Commentary, 10% detail

I bought this book hoping to learn lots and lots more about my favorite music producer (and I mean that in the literal sence - "Producer of music") Trever Horn. Although the book has a few tid-bits about the historic process that Horn created, there's no more detail or insight that I've read elsewhere. If you're a true fan of FGTH's or Grace Jones' Slave to the Rythm and wanna dive deeply into the production process, this book ain't for you. It is mostly commentary rather than story/information.
