Intriguing

I quite liked this book even though there were some definite issues. It is written in a quaint style, probably more reminiscent of the times being written about. It is clean, which is great as far as I'm concerned but it is also a little peculiar. The H is a real staid stick and the h is all that is proper and good. They don't get off to a good start but attraction blooms in spite of themselves. The h is contracted to marry the H's younger brother and the H does everything he can to make it happen. When the 2 main characters do admit their feelings, the brother comes back to 'haunt' them. It was quite sweet but hardly memorable.

A little slow reading at first, but it ended well. The ending did surprise me though concerning the brother Edward. I liked the characters of Cass and Julien and the way they slowly fell in love over the course of a few weeks. In the end, love did conquer all and Edward got what was coming to him !

Good Story, Weak Writing

This is a sweet, clean, traditional regency romance. The story is simple and follows a familiar pattern. Parents arrange marriages for their children who are forced to comply through various legal documents. Hero and heroine fall in love, but they are not intended for each other and the resulting drama takes place. Aside from the overly simple plot, my main complaint about the book is the rather atrocious writing. I have read other books by this author and I liked them a lot. Perhaps this one was a debut novel that was never revisited? But the writing truly was abysmal. It was very stiff, formulaic, and often read like a 'See Spot Run' book. The historical details were also often incorrect, as if the author was not familiar with the time period. I would recommend this book to someone who likes this author or to young readers.

About the Author

Ginny Olson abides in Minneapolis, MN where she is the Director of Youth Ministry for the Northwest Conference of the Evangelical Covenant Church as well as a writer, speaker and consultant. Previously, she was one of two directors of the Center for Youth Ministry Studies at North Park University in Chicago, Illinois.� She also served on the youth ministry staffs at Willow Creek Community Church and Grace Church, Edina, Minnesota. She is the author of “Teenage Girls” and co-editor and contributor to “Breaking the Gender Barrier in Youth Ministry.”

Diane Elliot is an experienced writer, editor, teacher of adults and teenagers, and is director of operations at the Northwest Suburban Christian Academy in Wauconda, Illinois.

Mike Work is the Vice President of Operations at Youth Specialties. His previous management� experience includes six years as an executive pastor and five years of business management consulting.� A veteran youth worker who has served more than 25 years in local and parachurch student ministry,� Mike has also served as the executive director of YFC’s DCLA Conferences and the executive producer for the PlanetWisdom Student Conference and the National Youth Workers Convention. He and his family make their home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Excellent resource

A little outdated but I can't criticize that.

Gives a lot of ideas, breaks things down easily. I'm a very disorganized person, that it is helping me.

Havn't read the whole book yet, though so far I am will pleased. It is not really a how to manual. But like the title of the book says, it's more instruction on how to manage and organize things.

So far it has already changed many things. Plus it will give you ideas for a lot of stuff.

This resource is EXHAUSTIVE to say the least. From how to organize your office right down to where you need to put your trashcan. Everything from getting a job to leaving gracefully, planning budgets to insurance liabilities. The CD included must have 100 forms that are necessary to any ministry with students. Don't pass this up. The forms on the cd are completely customizable to your ministry. You need this book! What an incredible tool!

Great Youth Ministry administration tool

I have taught this book in a seminary setting. It has some very practical ideas to share with new and experienced youth ministers/youth pastors. There are basically three sections: Tools to Help You Manage Yourself; Tools to Help Your Manage Ministry; and Tools to Help You Stay in Youth Ministry. All three sections have some serious and some humorous ideas on how to manage ministry. There is also a CD with the book which has a great deal of ministry forms (budget, planning, calendar, evaluation, medical release, CV, etc.), which are in a format which allows you to bring them up on your computer and change whatever you want to change to make it fit your situation. Why start a form from scratch when someone has already started it for you? My students really benefitted from this book and had their eyes openned to several situations they hadn't thought about before.

She argues that women's selves are constructed more around relatedness to others, while men develop an identity through denial of self-other connections. Taking on two psychoanalytic heavyweights, Herbert Marcuse and Norman O. Brown, Chodorow finds that their individualist theories work against human solidarity.

Another Insightful Glance into Herman

A wonderful source book to see what the world thought of Moby Dick from 1851 until 1970. It becomes clear that except for selected individuals, the world wasn't ready to look at itself in a way that left absolutes ambiguous and attitudes to belief systems open and accepting. It is a delight to read the views of those who really get Melville and appreciate his humble genius. One can only shake one's head at those poor saps who didn't.....

The vultures had mysteriously turned from scavengers to killers. No one knew why. These awful, scary, deadly creatures were probably the final blow that was leading to the collapse of Matt’s clan.

Matt was a Meerkat—those smallish African animals that humans seem to find cute and interesting. Matt, like all Kats, had his own distinct personality and skills. He had always been shy and could be a bit too rigid once he had a plan in mind. But an inherent sense of loyalty, a soft smile, and skills he always used to help the group had made him much appreciated. He had usually enjoyed life, and most of the time life had enjoyed him back. But then . . .

Because the rain seemed to have disappeared, his clan of fuzzy little creatures no longer had enough food for everyone. At least once a day, Matt ate less so the young and old and weak could have more. But that hardly made even a small contribution to solving the problem. The increase in the number of predators was—well, Matt had never seen anything like it. A few Kats said it was all connected. Less rain meant less food, which was leading to strange and unpredictable changes in predator behavior. But who knew for sure?

They could not seem to agree upon, much less bring alive, any new big ideas to deal with the new problems. For Matt and many others, that was incredibly frustrating. Making matters even worse, getting the most routine daily work done was proving more and more difficult.

It was not as if Matt never heard any promising new ideas. He had two very creative friends, Tanya and Ago, who had come up with a possible way to find more food and waste less, and a potential method of spotting predators faster than before. But both Kats ran into a wall of “that’s not the way we do things here,” a reaction that, considering the circumstances, made no sense. Matt tried to pitch in and show others why such an argument was illogical. He talked to Kats he knew the best, those born in litters about the same time as he was. He talked to his Family Chief. And he got nowhere.

We need more clarity about how a few rise once again to grow, fulfill their mission, create great jobs and services and wealth. It helps to see the role that discipline, planning, reliability, and efficiency play in these stories. And the role of passion, vision, engagement, speed, agility, and culture. And there is the issue of management versus leadership—and the latter not from just a few people in big corner offices.

Yes, yes, we know that this is a bit much for a short book. And, yes, many others have had much to say about these issues. But we think there is too much fog around some fundamental points that relate to success today. Only when we begin to lift that fog do we have a chance of turning twenty-first-century challenges and threats into exciting opportunities—for our businesses, governments, nonprofits, and ourselves. We could go on and on talking about the many decades of research underlying the ideas and insights in this story. But a discussion of that here could undermine our goals of being short, thought-provoking, useful, and fun.

Consisted but comprehensive

Thus is the most concise and comprehensive book I've read about leadership and management in fast change context.

The fable of the meerkats demonstrate that leadership and management are not a "neither ... or" . Organisations which are over managed and under led rise and fall. Equally organisations which are over led and under managed rise and fall. To succeed in question fast changing world, organisations must be both well led and well managed.

This is my take away after reading this great book from Kotter and Rathgeber.

A must read book for all managers and leaders.

This will book change millions of lives

This book was part of the reason that I took my current job with Kotter International. This is the sixth book that I've read by Dr. John Kotter over the past five years, and one of hundreds of business books that I've read during my career. This book will change things. The last time that I was this excited about the potential impact that a book can have on the lives of millions of people was my first time reading Crucial Conversations (Switzler et al). That's Not How We Do It Here! is a phrase that I have heard many times in my career; understandably, each time that I heard it, my passion for the organization waned. I am certain that if armed with the concepts of this book, my previous employers would realize lower employee turnover, and higher employee innovation leading to improved bottom line results. I have shared the book with many of them.

That's Not How We Do It Here! is a business fable, in the style of Our Iceberg is Melting (Kotter Rathgeber) and 5 Dysfunctions of a Team (Lencioni). Destin Sandlin said once, "Knowledge does not equal understanding" and that could not be a better explanation of why so many business books have been bought and read, and yet, many business leaders and managers fail to improve. The fable, is a great format to visualize the application of the rich and often complex concepts, providing clarity, and more importantly, understanding. I have shared this book with folks that I have worked with from all over the business spectrum (c-suite to contact center), and have found that everyone finds it both accessible and deeply engaging. One person didn't wait for me to explain what the book was about before diving in and not saying another word to me until she was 50 pages in. Her comment at that time, "Oh My God, That's US!"

The story is deeply engaging and the concepts are powerful. It doesn't follow the normal story arc of business books... Start with this (bad) go to this (good). It is much more complex than that. It touches on many elements of management and leadership that individually are all familiar no-brainers, but looking at them all together, it paints a vivid picture of why so many organizations struggle to be structured AND agile. I highly recommend this book to everyone that I meet and to everyone reading this review.

Not how we do it

I probably should have spent more time with this book, but wanted to get the big picture first. As a fan of Kotter, I like to skim for the big picture and go back for personal reflection and application. I recommend this book for groups working within groups or organizations that once were great, but doing what we always did doesn't work any longer.

About the Author
Ed Tarbuck and Fred Lutgens have been good friends and colleagues since 1970.� Between them, they have more than 57 years of experience teaching geology to undergraduates, and both have been recognized with awards as excellent and inspiring professors.� They share a special interest in introducing geology to beginning students and a belief in the value of field experiences for students of all levels.

Lutgens and Tarbuck published their first college text, Earth Science, in 1976.� That book, winner of the McGuffy Award from the Text and Academic Authors Association, is now going into its tenth edition.� In 1983, as the first edition of Earth was being prepared, gifted geology illustrator Dennis Tasa joined the author team.� Since then the three have collaborated on more than twenty projects.� Not only do Tarbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa work well together creatively; they also enjoy spending time in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Tasa’s New Mexico studio

Tarbuck enjoys downhill skiing in Colorado, fly fishing near his childhood home in Northern Minnesota, and spending time in the Cascades.� Lutgens is an avid runner, and when he can make the time, truly enjoys hiking the canyons of the Colorado Plateau.� Although Lutgens and Tarbuck think alike on many issues, they don’t agree on everything.� Lutgens is devoted to jazz and classical music, whereas Tarbuck prefers pop artists or a good country station.

An excellent and very thorough introductory text.

This text covers a lot of material, and manages to do so quite thoroughly and even fairly readably. It is a useful textbook for any "Intro to Geology" class, and would even be useful for someone interested in exploring the subject on their own, outside of a classroom.

Earth - an average introductory textbook

This book has dozens of errors, but in its defense, I must say that every introductory textbook I've used or reviewed has similar errors. For example, thermal expansion due to daily temperature fluctuations does NOT fracture rocks. Fire fractures rocks, and local fires can occur in many deserts. The photo of a rock split is actually due to ice (not frost) wedging. Deserts can be freezing. The book does not address the importance of past climates. Most of North America's landforms were formed under wet, warm climates, not today's. The hydrologic cycle should be expanded to the geohydrologic cycle, which incorporates plate tectonics. Plate tectonics, as presented, is rather primitive. We're in, I'd say, 3rd generation plate tectonics, but it is not being taught. Mountain glacial landscapes are entirely misinterpreted, based on a false paradigm originating in the 1840s. Yosemite Valley is far more a relict tropical landscape than a glaciated one, and Bridalveil Falls has existed for 10s of millions of years before glaciation. Evolution of desert landscapes is equally as bad. The authors don't understand pediments, which are exhumed weathering fronts (as in Joshua Tree National Park) or exhumed detachments (as in the Mojave Desert). Etc., etc.

This book is really great. It's pretty current with a lot of the geological events that have happened in the last few years. It has the earthquake in Japan listed, which I was not expecting. It's big and makes my backpack very heavy with needing to take my laptop to school as well. But that's just part of schooling I think. This one does NOT include the MASTERINGEOLOGY.COM key, so if you NEED that for class it'll be an extra purchase. I believe I was able to purchase the key for an extra $35 on the web-site. A lot of kids in my class bought the text in an online format and can only access it through their computer, they all told me it's a pain in the butt. So I think if you have the choice(and the money) to get the hard copy, that would be best.

Good book for civil engineering students

This book is very useful for every students who take civil engineering as their major. It give you all the explanation about concrete destruction because of nature and human error. And tells you how to repair it and to maintain it so it won't damaged more that it used to be. I find this book very helpful for my thesis. Every civil engineering students and other major that related to it has to own this book.
