A book that is needed to balance any debate

i read this book out of curiosity after seeing it promoted in an online christian forum. I am glad i read it because i think the author has something worhtwhile to say on the issue of gay parenting that is backed up by her personal experiance. It can be argued that she is letting personal feelings of bitterness determine her opinions on social/political opinions but those experiances need to be told otherwise the debate becomes unbalanced. I think she did the best job she could of being fair to her parents given the reality that no-one can view their own suffering objectivly and without any bias. This book should be read by anyone wanting to hear another side to the story.

Honest, unaffected, unflinching, unjudging

Painful at times to read--but I can only imagine how painful it was to write--and catharthic. I heard Dawn speak on a radio show and was impressed. Though the narrative occasionally skips around in time, it is well-written and holds together through some 4 decades of her turbulent life. The incredible thing is that she never failed in loving her parents despite this terrible betrayal.

The book is a portrait of the cost of sexual appetites unchecked and unleashed on the innocent. It reveals the generational nature of sexual sin--how it is passed down and through a family. Along the way, some innocents are miraculously restored to life; and some (like Dawn and her brother) rejoin the living only slowly.

Don’t be afraid to read it.

Out From Under- Dawn speaks with love and experience

Dawn Stefanowicz has boldly and openly shared a horrific life that is becoming more and more prevalent as society and its norms continue to crumble. In her personal memoir, Out From Under, Dawn reveals the mental torment she and her two siblings were raised in by a homosexual father and a weak mother.

Bravo!

Dawn's book is more than a personal analyzation of trauma caused by bad parenting. It reveals the darker side of a father's sexual appetites and how they can destroy the psyche of everyone he touches. It is not for the faint hearted. Be warned!

A thread of the religious runs through this tormented family and Dawn's ability to finally see true Christianity from the false is critical to her personal understanding of the need for a Father's love.

As Dawn openly works through her needs for love and affection it is clear this book is a manual for others that may find themselves in similar situations. She does not gloss over the ugly nor make it look like easy work. Change is never easy. But she eloquently shows her love and affection for her father and sees him as he truly was. Her ability to continually forgive the many ways her father continued to cause her pain throughout his life, show a strength that can only from the determination to deal with her own shortcomings over and over again.

Dawn's marriage and ability to be completely vulnerable with her husband show that they are in this thing together. Her self analysis by journaling was a step forward in her own healing and sharing those journaling efforts with her husband, seem to help her place her situations in perspective.

For those of us who love others in alternative lifestyles, this book is a warning of the effects of gay parenting and the backlash that it can create on the social structure of a society. Dawn speaks for those who cannot. May her work not be in vain.

Children are the most vulnerable of society and a society that will not protect its own children is a sad one indeed. May we be brave enough to love, reach out to and rescue these little ones who are hidden among us.

About the Author
Sylvia S. Mader has authored several nationally recognized biology texts published by McGraw Hill. Educated at Bryn Mawr College, Harvard University, Tufts University, and Nova Southeastern University, she holds degrees in both Biology and Education. Over the years she has taught at University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Massachusetts Bay Community College; Suffolk University; and Nathan Mayhew Seminars. Her ability to reach out to science-shy students led to the writing of her first text, Inquiry into Life, that is now in its thirteenth edition. Highly acclaimed for her crisp and entertaining writing style, her books have become models for others who write in the field of biology. Although her writing schedule is always quite demanding, Dr. Mader enjoys taking time to visit and explore the various ecosystems of the biosphere. Her several trips to the Florida Everglades and Caribbean coral reefs resulted in talks she has given to various groups around the country. She has visited the tundra in Alaska, the taiga in the Canadian Rockies, the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, and tropical rain forests in South America and Australia. A photo safari to the Serengeti in Kenya resulted in a number of photographs for her texts. She was thrilled to think of walking in Darwin’s steps when she journeyed to the Gal�pagos Islands with a group of biology educators. Dr. Mader was also a member of a group of biology educators who traveled to China to meet with their Chinese counterparts and exchange ideas about the teaching of modern-day biology.

Great Book and Little Bit Busy for Non-Bio Major

Favorite book for Biology I have ever come once upon a time. I forgot a world of archaic discontent and found myself in love with the verbage and literary lingo this key book has to offer. There is an expectancy beside the obvious college level or upper level grade school acquirement of biology and lab and highest respect for lab rules. On the other hand; this book is too questioning and racketeering of general instructions, in this field. It basically coins you around in the realm of Biology for Non-Biology Majors and still engages the reader enough to make it challenging and rudely energetic.

A low-cost alternative to the current edition

This was a required textbook. Actually it's one edition older than the one that the teacher put on the book list. But so far it's working fine. Looks like changes were minimal in the new edition. If you have a friend with the correct edition this might be a way to save some bucks like I did.

The price was a steal and the condition of the book was in excellent shape. The Plus Access card was missing but I was able to use the trial offered by the website to complete my assignments that was due.

About the Author
John Ashford grew up in Seattle, Washington, and graduated from the University of Washington. After a lengthy career in teaching and then as the director of a library, he began looking for a change. In 1990, he went to Botswana with the Peace Corps and served as a teacher. When he returned to Seattle, he taught at Seattle Community College part-time until his retirement. His articles and stories have appeared in the anthology ONE BY ONE: REMEMBERING THIRTY-ONE YEARS IN BOTSWANA, in Silk Road Review and in Seattle-area newspapers.

John had a wonderful sense of respect and curiosity for all the people ...

I've been waiting for years for John Ashford to write his book. Here it is…once I started to read it, I could not put it down! As a fellow Peace Corps Volunteer in the early 1990s, I'd travelled some of those dusty, sandy Kalahari paths with John and his wife, Gen. John had a wonderful sense of respect and curiosity for all the people we met, including the San. The rock paintings seen at Tsodilo Hills and John's prior knowledge of these indigenous people were enticements to go back and visit. He wanted to know more! John writes with humor, reflection and sensitivity about the indigenous people of Botswana.

Conversation with the author

I just finished the book, "Meeting the Mantis." My first reaction was, "What a direct and open conversation John is having with me." I appreciate that feeling of connection when I am reading. As I finished it I was of two minds. One, I was sorry that the adventure and experience, albeit vicarious, was over. Secondly I was so happy that I got to follow his vision and make this trip to the people of the bush. His sharing, openness and special insight are a gift.

Opened my eyes to a world I had hardly ever considered

A wonderful story: part travelogue, memoir, history and anthropology journal. This is the first-person account of John Ashford's personal journey in Africa ... and a glimpse into the lives and journey of today's Botswanan bushmen. John presents his journey through the eyes of the many people he met or interviewed in Botswana. And yet, this book flows like a novel. Although the questions John raises are unsettling, he avoids simple answers, leaving room for his readers to ponder these questions on their own. I highly recommend Meeting the Mantis.

Created for Love: Multiple Views of Attachment Theory in an Anabaptist Context

This volume makes the case that we as humans are created for relationship and at the heart of those relationships is love. It brings together research in neuroscience, psychology, couples therapy, conflict transformation, philosophy and theology, and the environment. Each author brings his or her perspective on attachment theory and the power of this relatively new discipline to make sense out of an increasingly interconnected world. Each of these perspectives is further contextualized within the broad view of the Anabaptist community whose spiritual commitment to what it means to be human infuses the entire work.

This is not a book to be read lightly. Each chapter is filled with ideas that stirred my heart and mind, challenging me to reflect deeply on them. For example, Dan Siegel, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA, wrote that "the mind is an embodied, relational, and emergent process that regulates the flow of energy and information." I realized this was a very rich description that required me to start exploring my own understanding of the mind and of how these concepts related to one another. One more addition. He posits that the self emerges out of interaction with other people and so how we engage with one another directly influences not only our own experience but also that of everyone we touch.

Another example comes from John Paul Lederach, Professor of International Peace Building at Notre Dame University, who wrote, "How do we create meaningful conversation about things that matter?" At one level this is an abstract idea. However, he tells a story of working with Balu, a Nepalese leader of the Kamaiya community. Balu's community were bonded slaves. When they were set free they had no place to go. They found space in a forest but became "encroachers" and the forest dwellers demanded they leave. The issues here are immense. What is necessary to be truly free? Can different communities with conflicting interests choose to live together? How is it possible to engage in a dialogue beyond self-interest?

This book reminds me of the opportunity for healing and reconciliation that science, psychology, and theology bring resources to. The Early's write in their conclusion, "As we move toward health--the integration that creates wholeness in self and society--we need conversations that encourage greater embodiment in both concept and lived experience." This book did just that for me, it encouraged thoughtful reflection and the inevitable desire to find conversation partners that will explore this journey with me.

Serious consideration of the topics and issues raised in this book will change you. I do not believe it is possible to not be affected by the research, insights, and conclusions of this remarkable collection of authors.

About the Author

Dr. Paul R. Baker began his security career in the U.S. Marine Corps as a military policeman. Upon discharge, he joined the Maryland State Police and worked in all phases of law enforcement, spending the majority of his career in the intelligence and narcotics areas. Upon retirement in 2001, he began the security management phase of his journey, working for the MITRE Corporation, Institute for Defense Analysis, Capital One Bank, and, finally, with the RAND Corporation.

Dr. Baker is board certified in security management as a certified protection professional (CPP) by ASIS (American Society for Industrial Security) International. He is an adjunct professor for University of Maryland University College in the homeland security field and an adjunct professor for Southwestern College in its security management curriculum. He is a contributor to the CRC Press books Official (ISC)2� Guide to the CISSP� CBK�, Second Edition and Official (ISC)2 Guide to the ISSAP CBK.

Dr. Daniel J. Benny is the security discipline chair at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He served as a U.S. Navy intelligence officer and DOD Federal Police Chief and holds a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Capella University. More of a very basic overview of physical security concepts. It's very general and by no means a "Complete Guide." I could see this as an introductory community college textbook that the professor would tell you "eh, pick it up if you want, it's on the syllabus, but you won't need it."

This enlightening book draws on previously unexamined primary sources—including histories, school curricula, pedagogical materials, periodicals, and memoirs—to demonstrate how the social locations of historians writ broadly influenced their interpretations of the past. The relative autonomy of these historians had a direct bearing on whether history upheld the status quo or became an instrument for radical change, and the writing of history became central to debates on social and political reform, the role of women in society, and the criteria for citizenship and nationality. Ultimately, this book traces how contending visions of Iranian history were increasingly unified as a centralized Iranian state emerged in the early twentieth century.

Fantastic New Viewpoints

I wish I could somehow write to Mr. Williams but I assume he might look at this review; however, my words are directed directly to him.

I too have read several books on The Bounty, including the Caroline book and another that was written by two authors as a novel told from the point of view of a fictional character. I've also seen most of the movies, and the methodical way you researched your book was a testament to your integrity, as you demolish so many falsehoods -- and give damn good reasons for that -- so I'm really enjoying the book. It has a very invested tone and I like that you don't shy away from injecting yourself into it from time to time -- it reads much less as the usual dry recitation of lists of facts.

It also doesn't approach the ludicrous writing style of people, I'm sorry to say, because I enjoy his books nonetheless, but Lennard Bickel's Arctic tales, in which he gives the final thoughts of a man plunging into a crevasse -- a total impossibility.

However, I'm sorry to have to mention that, as I used to be a professional editor and proofreader (I was educated at Charterhouse) I was distracted by errors on almost every page; not enough to affect meaning but things like run-on sentences which need semi-colons, spelling plurals with an apostrophe-S, as in things like "The boat's were . . ." and neglecting the apostrophe in possessive forms, as in "the battles main casualties were . . ." although those aren't the exact examples. And misspelling "bear" as "bare" and just things that a good editor would spot and clean up.

I'm guessing you must have self-published the book and probably couldn't afford a separate editor.

No matter, those are quibbles, and I must say this is easily the best book on the Bounty that I have ever read! Well done.

Despite the glitches so common with self published Kindle books I enjoyed this book a great deal. I've read several books on the Bounty and was generally aware of the case for Bligh and against the mutineers but Williams makes his case extremely well, though he sometimes hammers too hard at points he's already made quite clear. Williams is a good storyteller and his book explains the society and conditions of the characters, their personalities and the violent and tragic results of the mutineer's actions, some of which last even today.

The book has a good flow too and carried me along. Pretty good writing.

Is a very understandable monogram about Complex Integration

I have already read the most part of this monogram about Complex Integration and the Cauchy's Theorem and I have found it very clear
when comes to explaining the Cauchy's Theorem.In Chapter VI There are
some evaluation of integrals and walk you thru step by step up to the
the solution of the integrals.At the end of chapter VI there are about
50 exercises to evaluate integrals that I found them very challenging.
I recomend this monogram to somebody that is interested in learning
Complex Integration or brush up to some background that you might have
in Complex Analysis.

Must read for advanced novice and above

"Galen Rowell's Inner Game of Outdoor Photography" is a collection of articles written for Outdoor Photographer magazine organized into four broad categories. Interspersed between the articles are sections of photographs. Each article is cross-listed with relevant photographs, and vice-verse. This cross listing is an effective device; coming back to various photographs as I read the essays forced me to really think about them.
The first section deals with "creative and cognitive processes." These range from the inner desire needed to go out and get that shot to an almost scholarly examination - complete with annotated bibliography - of the processes involved in human sight and the differences between what people see and what film records. I found this section to be the strongest aspect of the book as well as the most useful and interesting.
The second section consists mainly of technical material ranging from how to pack your gear to ways to use flash in outdoor settings. It is pitched at a higher level than an introductory photo guide, suitable for an advanced novice like myself.
The third section is primarily a collection of travel stories, often only tangentially touching on photography. However, these articles provide the context in which many of the photographs in the book were taken. Arguably, context is the crux of photography. As Rowell points out, photographs are used to tell a story - though maybe not the one intended by the photographer.
The last section conveys Rowell's view on the positive and negative effects that photography and outdoor travel have on the natural environment, as well as on the art of color outdoor photography vis-�-vis fine art photography. These essays are thought provoking and, like the rest of the book, very well written.
I had feared from the title that I was in for a bunch of pseudo-spiritual babble, but instead I found a fairly deep, if meandering, discussion of the spectrum of what outdoor photography involves.

Not much of a "game", mostly "travel log"

I read some of the reviews about this book present on this site and was somewhat surprised to see mostly positive ones. Maybe it is just my perception or the expectation I had after reading these reviews but before buying the book that lead to my disappointment in the book. What were my expectations...? I did expect Galen to tell me what he thinks and feels before, during, and after taking those great pictures. I did NOT expect a HOW-TO book (which it is definitely not). I expected a book about artistic approach to the outdoor photography. What I found instead was mostly a travel log. The first 2 chapters were as close to my expectation as it ever got. The author talked some about his creative approach and very little about his technical one. The rest of the book doesn't even present his "photographic philosophy". He simply talks about his travels, places he visited, people he met. All that would be great for an illustrated travel book but not for a book that was supposed to tell me about how HE came to those pictures, what (in his opinion) made those pictures great or standing out (there is some of it but so little it almost doesn't exist). The book's title has "inner game" words in it. I wanted to know what that "inner" game was before, during, and after taking EACH picture (or at least most of them). Overall - disappointing and expensive for that.

The "Inner Passion" of Galen Rowell

If you're a serious photographer (amateur or pro) and find your interest in shooting lagging occasionally, Rowell's enthusiasm might be contagiousness enough to provide a cure. This man was passionate about photography and went to extraordinary ends to get the shots he visualized. The majority of the book deals with his philosophy of photography and how he accomplished what he did. There's also much excellent technical advice. The book's only shortcoming, from my very personal perspective (take it for what it's worth), is the undercurrent of Rowell's ample ego. Were the personal pronoun "I" deleted from the book, its page count would be reduced considerably. Nonetheless, I still strongly recommend "Inner Game" for the highly passionate and very personal account that it is - an extraordinary photographer's testimonial to a life totally devoted to the art of photography and love of nature. It makes you want to climb a mountain and take pictures!
