Dry!! Dry!! and not what I was looking for!

I wanted to know more about colloidal silver. And since Searle was head of one of the biggest pharmaceuticals at one time, thought I'd read what he wrote. Not much on colloidal silver. Lots of info on colloids written in scientific jargon. Probably well written for it's purpose but not what I needed. I'm still looking for info.

This mystery novel places readers in a grounded realistic fiction at the beginning, and then takes an unexpected turn into the science fiction genre in the latter half, with the former portion being the more cohesive. Well-developed characters lead readers on a journey through the past toward a confusing and drawn out conclusion, which will leave them questioning the trip. Thorough integration of historical information into the narrative allows teens to learn about Phaistos discs and past civilizations, while keeping them intrigued. Ancient Saviors or Antediluvian Horrors?

When I opened up to the first page of THE FIRE SEEKERS, I had an involuntary groan at the 1st person narrative (I had forgotten peek at the LOOK NOW feature before hitting the BUY button). Just who I am as a reader, yet I mention this to emphasize the enjoyment I had BECAUSE OF Richard Farr's skillful use of internal discourse, external action, and an absolutely entertaining melding of our hero's personality and the unraveling mysteries with a clarity that never left me muddled nor divorced me from the unique voice of our teen hero. That's a laudable achievement in respects to me as a reader who is usually pre-disposed against 1st person styles. After a lengthy prologue and mid-way into the first chapter, I knew I had to stop and go to the grocery store for what I call "reading snacks"... meaning I was definitely in it for the long haul.

Take an ancient, terrible mystery, not unlike the core of H.P. Lovecraft's own varied mythos, infuse it into an international thriller with all the exotic trimmings, then mix in a dash of outlandish teenager adventuring (and humor) that did bring to mind the movie THE GOONIES, and you get the first book in the planned BABEL TRILOGY. With such a epic scope of compiling oodles of historical fact with fun novelization of "what ifs", it makes the "From the Author: Some Notes on Fact and Fiction" at the end of the book rather interesting, do-not-miss reading in itself, replete with Farr's own wry humor (this last portion alone constitutes 7% of the book's length, going chapter by chapter). And yes, the book does quite openly lead to the next installment, so for those who prefer tidy endings, even in a pending series, you may wish to wait till all three are out. I personally wish all three were out right now. I would immediately dig into the next one... then the last one, I am sure.

Some profanity is sprinkled throughout, and those of particular sensitivity towards secular (even jocular) treatment of divinities may also want to pass. However, in reference to predominately explicit content often found in modern thrillers, THE FIRE SEEKERS is on the cleaner side of the spectrum, being on the whole a PG-13 (to borrow from the old movie ratings) body of work.

Not Sci Fi

I think Amazon made a mistake classifying this book as sci fi. And calling it YA sci fi just makes the mistake worse. I think they said YA because Daniel, the main character, is a teenager for most of the book. But he has the insight, problem-solving skills and world view of a 40 year old man so it doesn't make sense to me to limit the audience to YA readers.

And this is not a sci fi book. I think Amazon would have a Kindle best seller if they positioned it as a novel in the tradition of Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code". If you are reading this Mr. Farr, please don't be insulted. You are a much, much better writer and have filled your book with accurate ancient history rather than half-baked goofy ideas. BUT, "The DaVinci Code" was a huge best-seller and made a ton of money. So if you are reading this review, please show it to your Amazon editor. And if someone at Amazon is reading this review, please consider my suggestion and thank you for finally putting a good book in the Kindle First program.

Any reader who enjoys adventure along with learning interesting things about ancient civilizations should enjoy this book. At one point I said to myself that I couldn't believe Daniel could get into any more threatening situations, but then he did.

A few reviewers have mentioned that very religious people might have an issue with the book. I guess that's possible. But "The DaVinci Code" said terrible things about Catholics and it was a best-seller and a profitable movie.

Huh? Sci-fi, no. Mystery, kinda. Action, yes. But it doesn't make sense.

This book was easily readable and I found the premise interesting. However, I had several problems.

First, I found the characters and situations preposterous or totally flat. The protagonist is Daniel, a teenage boy born to two geniuses. Dad speaks many languages and is a professor and minor celebrity. Mom used her gifts to make a boatload of money, sell the company, and home school her "average" son. This average kid cooks, extreme rock climbs, flies helicopters, scuba dives, knows karate - and all like a pro. It helps that Mom's idea of home school is to gallivant around the world, but it still stretches the imagination to the breaking point. And of course each of these skills is used to save the day at the very last moment. I found his relationship with both parents to be cliched. Of course he has daddy issues, it's that kind of book. Of course all his friends are geniuses of one sort or another. You would think that the insecurity being "average" around all these incredibly smart people might lead to some tension, but you would be wrong. His love interest is a card board cut out. His best friend is interesting, but not given enough space to really grow. His other friends are non- existent. The villain (if that's what you call him) is flat. His dad is flat. His sister is flat. The only one with any depth is Daniel and as we see, that's mostly in skills. The situations are seriously improbable and also cliched. This guy has answers! So guess what happens. The timeline of the book is hard to figure out as well. It feels like he just got home when suddenly he's off racing around the world with his best friend who was JUST released from the hospital with life threatening injuries. Does the book cover a few weeks? A few months? No idea.

Second, where was the sci-fi? I read a ton of sci-fi and in good sci-fi the world is skewed enough that it highlights the more human questions. Good sci-fi isn't always about the aliens or tech, it's about the people. But the sci-fi is there, it is always the stage that sets up the other drama. The question of what the disks are, who the Architects are, and what they are up to are asked frequently in the book, but no answers are given. I know this is the start of a series, and perhaps the author thought leaving the basic outline to another book is a good way to get return readers. I think basic outlines belong in the first book personally. Maybe he wanted more mystery. But to me, in a good serial mystery the mystery gets gradually deeper. One answered question gives birth to two new questions. Not answering the questions doesn't intrigue me, it annoys me and makes me wonder what was accomplished other than running around. And it certainly didn't set any stage or shape a world. It was only the very weak impetus to action.

Third was the ending. It just didn't work for me. I didn't like following one character through the whole book, only to have that voice replaced by another character that was still very one dimensional. It seems like society has crumbled and people have taken to the hills, but no explanation for this is given. But they could just be camping too.

The other thing that grated on me is the constant scorn that is heaped on anyone of any faith. Not just Christians, but Jews, Muslims, Hindus, even the new religion of the book. The author clearly has no use for such people. People of faith are stupid cows that believe in magic. The author grudgingly tries to be fair by making the mother go around randomly to various religious ceremonies, but just for the ceremony, and it really doesn't help.

All in all, I won't recommend this book and probably won't read this author again.

About the Author
Charles Ksir received his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and his Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington. Following his postdoctoral training in Neurobiology at the Worcester Foundation in Massachusetts, he began a 34-year career in teaching and research at the University of Wyoming, where he also served in a variety of administrative positions. Now a professor emeritus, he focuses his efforts on teaching and textbook writing. He has taught the psychology course Drugs and Behaviour to more than three thousand students since 1972 and has received several teaching awards.

Dr. Carl Hart is an Associate Professor in both the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology at Columbia University and is also a Research Scientist in the Division of Substance Abuse at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. A major focus of Dr. Hart’s research is to understand the complex interactions between neurobiological and environmental factors that mediate and modulate the actions of drugs of abuse, including drug-taking behaviour and cognitive performance. Dr. Hart’s research has been supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse for the past several years. In addition to his substantial research responsibilities, Dr. Hart teaches an undergraduate Drugs and Behaviour course and was recently awarded Columbia University’s highest teaching award.

Nice and compact

Nice and compact. Had to get this for my addiction class. The chapters are nice and detailed and helped me get my homework and required reading done. Studying this textbook helped me ace my exams. I like that this textbook is smaller and lighter than normal textbooks. I wished all textbooks were this size.

It does a good job of reviewing societal thought on drugs and different trends noticed, but it's much too dated. A newer book would probably be better suited for someone that is actually interested in this.

The book is easy to read, well written, an excellent reference source of information on basic drug addiction, societal implications, and brief history of the development of drugs and pharmaceutical manufacturing, as well as drug regulation.
Recommended; the reader has basic chemistry and human physiology knowledge.

About the Author
Keith Gray was born in Grimsby. As a child Keith found reading a chore, but later found a talent in reading and writing, and at 24 he had his first book published, Creepers, which was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award. Since then he has written numerous novels and has been on the judging panel for the Blue Peter Book Award, the Guardian Fiction Prize and the Bookstrust Teen Prize. He has also edited two collections of short stories for Random House and reviews teen fiction for The Scotsman. He currently lives in Edinburgh.

Well worth the price of entry

I'm only half-way through the book, but so far it reminds me very much of Colleen Mariah Rae's Movies in the Mind, How to Build a Short Story, except this book focuses on screenwriting rather than short stories, and Christina Kallas comes off as far more steeped in the scholarship of dramaturgy and poetics.

All in all, an exceptional hybrid of a book on story structure and a helpful how-to guide of writing exercises. As I said, I've only completed the first half of the book and I already feel that I've gotten way more than my money's worth, though I do have to echo the comment of a previous reviewer, that this is probably not the best book for beginning students of story structure. If you are just getting started with story structure or narrative theory, let me recommend Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need, or Invisible Ink: A Practical Guide to Building Stories that Resonate, or even Robert McKee's Story: Substance, Structure, Style and The Principles of Screenwriting.

But if you're a serious student, this is a must-have book.

A Marriage of Reason and the Imagination

This is a wonderful manual, but it isn't a manual, because a manual is what you need when you want to fly an airplane not write a screenplay. Instead, it's a springboard for your imagination. While synthesizing the best ideas of Frank Daniel and Linda Seger, among others, Ms. Kallas launches a novel writing approach that centers on emotion. Many screenwriting books are overly prescriptive, treating European art-house and American independent films--when they aren't ignoring them altogether--like failed Hollywood films. It's an upside-down world where the model supersedes the art object, but it's where we often find ourselves, in meetings and manuals, as if the reason we once built cathedrals was that we could then get our hands on some really great blueprints for cathedrals. Ms. Kallas corrects the balance by focusing on the creative process itself: she reintegrates emotion, which leads to an honest and engaging story, with reason, which helps us structure the narrative as we go along.

Emotional structure is less a formula than a beacon to guide you through the mists of complex narrative, past the Hollywood Scylla of cat-saving and the indie Charybdis of navel-gazing. Ms. Kallas shifts the emphasis from a film's plot points to its emotional development, which in an effective film remains coherent regardless of whether the narrative is single-protagonist and linear (Classical Hollywood structure), or multi-protagonist and non-linear (alternative structures). She grounds her approach in close readings of the right films (the book's subplot, as she calls it; most illuminating are her analyses of La Notte and The Celebration) and in practical exercises, the best of which are inspired by theatrical work, the kind actors do to better inhabit a character.

It's a difficult thing to talk about the emotional component of a film without slipping into sentiment, but Ms. Kallas pulls it off. She advocates a whole-brained approach. Free-form writing in the beginning shoos the inner critic out of the room and keeps the early drafts vital. Later, you can allow the critic back inside to play architect during the rewrites. There are some unexpectedly useful methods here for sparking the process, ways to generate a writing flow to blast through all the logjams. The exercises encourage careful observation of the world and of your own thoughts, helping you develop an honest story with an organic structure. Emotion, in the sense developed here, proves to be a flexible and effective organizing principle.

The book's most winning quality is Ms. Kallas's passion, humming beneath the scholarship. Already something of a marvel in being both an academic and a screenwriter--sadly, the industry and the academy rarely correspond, and when they do it's like Nixon in China, but without the interpreters--she impresses too with her commitment to improving the screenwriter's lot in the industry. She calls for a re-evaluation of the writer's contribution, and she persuades us in an epilogue that the auteur theory, which served a particular place and time, is mostly bollocks. If you want a balanced approach to structuring screenplays, a reminder of why you want to write in the first place, and a set of spurs for your imagination, then buy this book.

Not for Beginners, but fabulous

This isn't a book for beginners. You need to know a lot about the subject, the Poetics, Aristotle and Plato, and a random assortment of odd facts--but, if you do? This book will blow you away. Although I need to back that up. This book will blow you away if you have an open mind and are willing to explore new ground. Kallas isn't easy to understand, and is occasionally almost "too" academic, but her work on emotional structure goes way beyond what is currently out there in the field.

It is "not" the right fit for someone still working through structure by the minute or believes turning points are set in stone. It's a tour de force of original thought by a master in her field. This book is front and center on my keeper shelf. Nice job.

Joel Bakan is professor of law at the University of British Columbia. A Rhodes Scholar and former law clerk to Chief Justice Brian Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada, he holds law degrees from Oxford, Harvard and Dalhousie Universities. Corporations may cause the extinction of the human species.

This is the most important book I have read during my lifetime. The content of the book has been well described in other reviews. I just want to add one observation. Fossil fuel corporations will maximize their profits by extracting all the accessible carbon buried in the earth and putting it into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas). This is no doubt an interesting experiment, since this is something that has never happened before since life began on this planet billions of years ago. But I really do not want to find out what will happen. The planet Venus is much like our planet, except that its atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide and it is hot enough at the surface to melt lead. Venus is a good illustration of a runaway greenhouse effect. It may not get that bad here, but certainly industrial civilization will collapse, and there will be mass famine and mass migrations as people travel north to get away from tropical heat. We are living through the sixth mass extinction since the beginning of life on earth, Usually the dominant species becomes extinct. We are the dominant species.

Good intentions, infeasible suggestions

This book is an evaluation of corporation in contemporary society. Bakan provides a critical but convincing analysis of the profound influence of corporations in the world. His criticism of company as selfish, immoral profit-maximizing creature is accurate and sound. Corporate social responsibility, as he described, is a public relations strategy to cover the unpleasant core of corporation. The pursuit of financial returns has indeed led to environmental and social damages and drastically reshaped the political landscape. I largely agree with Bakan's observation but remain skeptical to his suggestions. His call for return to New Deal-era regulations is not very applicable to 21st-century America, as most of the multinationals have become stronger than any single state. He also emphasized collective action among citizens and cooperation among states. Both of them are easier said than done. In general, Bakan's work is a pleasant reading and raises important issues concerning the corporation. The policies he proposed are more debatable. As we can see, government oversight over financial activities remains inadequate after 2008. That any particular government can unilaterally better its control of corporations does not match with reality.

Greed is not good

This book here argues that the modern corporation, despite doing some good, is basically a force of evil. I know that it sounds melodramatic to call corporations a force of “evil,” but how would you call the very opposite of a force of goodness? The reason why corporations are so bad is because they are greedy, completely amoral, totally ruthless and too powerful.

The author starts with describing how corporations came to be. They have their beginnings as early as the 16th century. Back then they were created either through a direct act of government of with government’s tacit approval. They came into being to run large scale business enterprises that individual businessmen could never finance and run. Corporations had a very bad opinion back then and were seen as a dirty but necessary evil. They were plagued by corruption and scandals and many eventually collapsed due to their own shady dealings, pulling down the economy in the process and forcing the government to come in and clean up their mess. (Sounds familiar?)

As world trade and infrastructure grew, the number and size of corporations also grew. They often came into being to construct such things as canals, bridges and roads. But they really took off in later half of 19th century with the rise of the railroads and the industrial revolution. All this time the corporations chafed and struggled against the laws and regulations put on the by governments. Through a number of (back then) controversial judicial decisions they were eventually granted personhood. Nowadays, according to the law they are a person like you and me and they have all the same rights (but few of the duties).

Aside for the obvious fact that it is ridiculous to treat an organization exactly like a human being, the problem here is that corporations act like psychopaths. A corporation is required by law to exist for one and only one purpose, and that is to make money, make more money and make even more money. Corporations must seek profits any way they can and the profits must always grow.

To some extent this is only to be expected. A corporation has a lot of expenses and it must make enough money to cover them or it will go bankrupt. Naturally, earning enough to cover the expenses is not enough. Everyone who runs any kind of business wants to be able to pay all the expenses and make a little bit of profit on top of that. But corporations don’t want to make just a little bit of profit. They want (must) make as much profit as they can and keep doing it over and over again.

Isn’t that the very definition of greed?

If corporations were greedy and nothing else, it would have been very bad but not dangerous. But corporations pose a danger to human society by being completely ruthless in their pursuit of greed. They violate laws whenever they believe that they can get away with it. They lobby governments to weaken regulations that protect people. They poison and destroy the ecosystem. They brutally exploit employees and discard them when they are no longer needed. The examples of corporate abuses, scandals and crimes are countless. This book was written somewhere around 2004 or 2005 (I don’t recall exactly) and it talks a lot about Enron.

Enron was a respected, gigantic energy company that claimed to be nothing but a concerned, responsible “citizen” all the while it was orchestrating electricity blackouts in order to raise prices of electricity and reap record profits. It was its own greed and lack of morality that shattered it.

Corporations are not sadistic. They do not hurt other people because they like it, but it is part of doing business. Any corporate manager who is putting the interests of someone or something else above the interests of his corporations is failing in his legal duties and can be fired or sued by the shareholders.

If you were to meet an individual who cares only about making money, who has no honor, morals or integrity and who is ready and willing to hurt, abuse and even kill others for money so long as he thinks that he can get away with it, what would you think of him? But corporations are not people. They are organizations composed of thousands of people. How can these people commit such wicked deeds and sleep at night? They can’t be all psychopaths, can’t they?

No, they are not psychopaths. The vast majority of corporate managers are decent, good people. In the book we meet some of them who openly admit that what they do is immoral, but they justify themselves by saying that this is only a job and what matters is being a decent human being in private life.

Sadly, in my other readings (and even in real life) I have encountered this way of thinking. It is a form of mentality and philosophy that is utterly incomprehensible to me. I guess that it is better to be a bad person only from 9 to 5 rather than 24/7, but in the end you are still hurting other people and making the world a bad place. Try to imagine yourself at the receiving end of this philosophy. Imagine that someone hurts you and when you confront them about it they say: “Look. It was just part of my job. I am not a bad person. When I go home, I am a really decent guy. What I did to you, that was not personal.” Would you accept this is a justification?

But most corporate people do think even in this way. The people quoted above at least recognize that what they do from 9 to 5 is bad. The majority of corporate people see absolutely nothing wrong with what they do from 9 to 5. The most likely reason for that is that they are educated and raised to think that what corporations do is perfectly normal. Quite often they are born into corporate families, they go to business schools where corporate philosophy is drilled into them and when they get a job in some corporation, they are surrounded by people who think just like them. Why would they question their life?

Another reason is that corporate people rarely, if ever, see the effects of their destructive policies. For example, corporations have outsourced most of their manufacturing to Third World countries where workers are treated like dogs and paid less than dogs. And if the workers ever rebel, the corporations bribe the local generalissimo to send his thugs to put them down. But the corporate managers simply never see the despair and suffering of those workers. They sit in their posh offices in New York, London or Tokyo and read reposts about productivity and profits coming from these factories, but the reports say nothing about the human suffering that goes into obtaining this productivity and profits. And even if the company president goes to those countries to visit one of these factories, these are highly controlled visits where the local management shows him what they want him to see.

If you have been paying attention to the news and/or reading other books about the recent (2008) financial crisis, none of this will be surprising to you. For decades banks have been lobbying for financial deregulation. Eventually they finally got it and they started immediately investing in risky, shoddy business ventures that were unsafe in the long run but they brought in high profits in the short run. There were people in and outside of the financial establishment warning against it, but they were ignored. The pressure to seek profits wherever possible proved so strong and irresistible that the management chose to invest in these risky ventures anyway. As a result, they nearly destroyed their own companies. Had it not been for the massive (the biggest in history, in fact) government intervention, all of the world’s major financial institutions would have been wiped out.

The danger that the corporations pose to human society is enormous, but also insidious and difficult to notice. Corporations are hurting people through their unhealthy and dangerous practices. They poison and destroy the environment. They are also afraid of popular resistance so they influence governments to crush it and persecute activists. They oppose any form of political and social progress that is perceived as threatening their profits. They fight and often defeat organizations like labor unions or environment protection groups. But the worst thing in my opinion is that they want to create a society where people are interested only in consuming and buying. When people think that buying things is the purpose of life, they are going to spend more money. And the more money they spent, the more money the corporations are going to make.

The power and influence of the corporations is tremendous, but the author does not give in to despair. He believes that corporations can be defeated through activism and popular resistance. It is already happening. Why do you think the corporations pretend to be so charitable and eco friendly? It is because of the popular pressure. Nowadays, a corporation who openly declares that it cares about nothing else than profit and gives nothing to charitable causes will not do business for long.

In the past centuries the power of the Church and feudal aristocracy was tremendous. The Church and the feudal system were so ingrained into the society that most people could not even conceive a world without them. And just like corporations today, the Church and the aristocracy claimed that their role is essential and the world cannot go on without them.

And where are those feudal lords and the all-powerful Church today? Corporations have not always been there and they don’t have to be there forever.

Included in the accounts are Jim’s recollections of investigations in which he was personally involved as a member of the murder squad, and these give a special insight in the methods employed by the police in the 1950s and 1960s.

Many individual cases show interesting aspects of law and the varied ways in which unfortunate victims were killed, by shooting, bludgeoning, strangling, stabbing and poisoning. The various motives include drunken and domestic rage, jealousy, robbery and sex.

The book contains many illustrations, some of them official police photos showing the scene of the crime and published for the first time.

The murder accounts appear in strict chronological order, allowing the reader to dip into the period of their choice. The earlier cases will also arouse nostalgia for roads and premises that have long since vanished.

Included in the accounts are Brown’s recollections of investigations in which he was personally involved as a member of the murder squad, and these provide a unique and fascinating insight into the methods employed by the police in the 1950s and 60s.

The book contains many illustrations, some of them official police photos showing the scene of the crime and published for the first time, making Southampton Murder Victims a must-read for the bloodthirsty, the historians and the just plain curious.

Good victim focused crime book

In this book Jim Brown uses some previously unseen sources, including some of the archives of the Hampshire Constabulary. There are 80 murder cases including some recent cases such as the murder of Luke Woolf (2009) and the murder of Wieslaw Filus (2009).
In the case of Iris Dawkins (1960) you will discover how a dog called Sophie helped catch the murderer.
In 1967 elderly Lizzie Dymott was tied up in her bungalow and left to die by burglars. Nine days later she was visited by her nephew who found her dead. Those responsible for her harrowing death may have served their time, but the crime should haunt them for the rest of their lives.
It makes a change to read a crime book that gives more prominence to the victims than those who committed the crime.With photographs of some of the victim's memorials they are remembered appropriately.

Excellent Textbook--not just a Q&A

This is the Seventh edition and it covers the question pool in place between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2015. Be sure you get the right edition for the question pool you're studying!

Excellent book. I'm very pleased with it. The book is laid out rather like a textbook: they take a subject like Antennas and discuss that in depth. After each section, they refer you to the relevant questions in the question pool (included in the back of the book) so you can immediately test yourself. Every question in the pool is answered (one way or another) in the text.

The question pool is set up so you can test yourself, and each question has a reference back to the page where it's answered in the text. So if there's a specific question you want answered, you can quickly find it in the text.

The book is heavily illustrated, well laid out and well written. The print is relatively large so I don't need my bifocals to read it. It's large and quality bound. Some books fall apart as soon as you open them; not this.

I have not tried the CD-ROM with the computer testing. I used the online tests on QRZ.com instead, so I can't evaluate it.

If you're already familiar with the concepts and all you really need is the question pool with a few notes, you'd be better off with another book. But if you want something that covers the material in-depth, rather than just answering specific questions, I don't think you can find a better book than this.

Gordon West versus ARRL Study Guide

If you're unsure if you should buy the Gordon West or AARL ham radio license books, here is my take:
* Gordon West's book: Gordo's book is the only thing you need to pass the test. He gives you just the information you need to answer each question on the test, but the book is rather small and provides very little in-depth explanation. Gordo's book also provides an audio CD that is fun to listen to in the car. You can actually hear communications of all sorts, on many bands, and Gordo explains exactly what it's all about. You certainly don't need this to pass the test, but it's fun and interesting to listen to.
* ARRL License Manual: The ARRL book is much larger than Gordo's book and provides significantly more information. It will of course teach you everything you need to know to easily pass the test, but also gives you a lot more in-depth (and very interesting) information. Just as with my Technician license, I plan to use Gordo's book to get through the test, but have also purchased this book because I want to know a lot more. The AARL book also includes a computer CD which includes practice tests.
* SUMMARY: BOTH books are excellent. Which one you buy is really a matter of how much you want to learn about ham radio. Buy Gordo's book if you just want to pass the test, or buy the ARRL book if you really want to understand a lot about the hobby and pass the test *easily.*

Excellent and Complete Resource

This is a wonderful resource and contains within it everything you need to both learn the subjects covered by the General Class license test and also to pass it - these being two slightly different objectives.

The book itself is well laid out and well written, providing an easy to understand explanation of the theory and principles that one needs to know. As a stand-alone manual/textbook, it deserves very high marks.

Now for the 'secret sauce' in the book. Interspersed in the text are references to specific questions from the question pool, alongside the text that represents the answers to the questions. So you know which parts of the book to concentrate on to pass the test (as opposed to generally understand the entire subject as a whole).

I found it helpful to highlight the exact phrases in the text and link them to the question pointers.

Moving on to a 'learning to pass the test' strategy, there are several things to do. The back of the book has the entire pool of questions, and the answers to each question, and it would be possible to learn them by rote. In addition, each question is also cross-referenced back to the text in the book.

So I'd test myself each question. If I knew the answer and understood it, great. If I didn't, I'd then flip back to the appropriate page in the book and bone up on the theory behind the question and answer until I did know it. Then on to the next question, and so on.

Okay, so far so good. But wait, there's more. Also provided with the book is a CD that loads a program onto your PC (not Mac compatible) and you can use this for several different purposes. You can use it to auto-generate tests and test yourself, to see how you are doing. This is great (although I also very much like the auto-generated tests on eham.net). It also allows you to step through the test questions, either in order, or randomly, and each time you answer a question it then immediately tells you if you got the answer correct or not - this is good; and also then explains the answer - this is great.

So if you get a question wrong, you are immediately given a mini-overview of the topic by the program. This makes it a very efficient way of learning. Only if the mini-overview is insufficient do you then need to go back to the text book.

If you do need to go back to the book, you can zero in immediately on the specific point you need to understand because of the way the specific paragraphs in the book are labelled by the questions that refer to them, allowing you to first get the exact answer/explanation you need, then to read on around the paragraph, before and after, to put it in a broader concept.

Effective use of the book and the software together means you should be able to learn all you need to know in very short order to pass the test. In my case - and I say this not to boast, but rather to simply indicate the efficacy of this learning method - I spent a week of moderate learning prior to sitting the test. At the start of the week, before opening the book for the first time, I was passing about 25% of the questions on eham.net generated tests, and totally lost/out of my depth. At the end of the week, I was getting 34 or 35 of the 35 questions every time, and feeling very comfortable, due to the incredibly efficient learning process this book allows. Best of all, I wasn't merely regurgitating rote-learned answers that I didn't understand, I was feeling comfortable with the topics being tested and the underlying knowledge needed.

Oh yes. The final 'for real' exam? It took me about 5 minutes, and I got all 35 correct. Not because I'm clever. But because this book and learning system is so effective. Thank you very much to the people who designed and wrote it.
