The latest version of the second oldest RPG

Tunnels and Trolls was invented by Ken St Andre in 1974 as a reaction to Dungeons and Dragons. It was the second ever roleplaying system and it is still going strong 35 years later.The 7.5e is also written by Ken St Andre, who has remained actively involved with his game since its birth. You can speak to him at his Trollhalla site, he is very approachable. This edition is still essentially compatible with materials printed for previous versions.
It is a straight forward game system that is ideal for introducing new comers to role playing. It has a generally tongue in cheek feel to the rules, with spell names such as 'Take That You Fiend' for a magical blast, and 'Hidey Hole' for invisibility. However the game can (and is) used to recreate gritty dark worlds as much as magical fantastical ones. The core system for resolving tasks/stunts and so on is a simple roll of two normal six sided dice added to a characters attribute or skill (known as Talents in the game). This allows for endless flexibility when adjudicating outcomes for the games master.
The 7.5e pack also includes a book of monsters (the Monstrum Codex) , a book of additional spells (Codex Incantatem), a Gamesmaster adventure (Hot Pursuit) and a solo adventure ('Strange Destinies'). It represents excellent value for money.
I recommend T&T for gamers new to roleplaying, for whom it is a very accessible system, or for more experienced role players who want to play a game that has elegant core mechanics and lets you concentrate on the game play more than the system.

Outstanding, complete, elegant, and with extension abilities

7.5 is a very complete game.
Some excellent ideas in the game:
Atributes can be raised by spending adventure points.
Spells can be powered up by spending more power on them.
Luck is an attribute.
clerics and all magic users merged into wizard
Monsters.
Spells.
dice included!
smaple character sheet.
you get a ton for very littel money and a complete game that doesn't turn you into a computer like 4e D&D which is rippoff of palladium 1ed ed fantsy.
You can also extend the rules and the author even says saving throws can be used to try certain unusuall maneuvers and that if you haven't added few rules for unforseen things then you haven't played much :)
You could easily add circle magic or diabolist/summoning magic from palladium for example, and or the mind mage stuff.
I highly reccomend simpler more elegant system like this as opposed to 4e d&D or pathfinder, and then leting player DM extend.
That said everything is complete as is.
weaponry you might never heard of.
Spells with interesting names and abbreviations.
Interesting quirks like any tripple triggers a second roll.
Any doulbe same way.
Easily this is one of best values ever.
I am pissed I missed the Az convention.

Too much for newbies; off the mark for vets; there are better systems free online

I'm sick of D&D and have gotten deeply into rpg's with simpler rules that focus more on storytelling. I've heard so much happy nostalgia for T&T from fellow gamers that I thought it would be perfect for playing with my 6-year old daughter. But I can tell, just reading the rulebook (and you may say it's unfair of me to judge the game without even playing it first, but I've played enough rpg's like it that I think I know whereof I speak) that it's not for us.
There's a lot of double and even triple-digit addition; combat boils down to a horserace to see whose die rolls add up quicker (there is one parenthetical comment on p. 121 - a 'principle of good play' - that probably actually makes the combat fun, but why is that parenthetical and not the core of the system?); and there's an overwhelming amount of text.
There are so many free light-on-rules rpg's on the internet that have this beat. If you're looking for simple rules, consider Risus. If you're looking for Old School Revival (fantasy rpg's the way they used to be played) consider Redbox Hack or Old School Hack. If you're looking for some tactical combat, consider Legends of the Ancient World. If you're looking for the latest in cutting-edge role-playing techniques in your fantasy dungeoncrawling, look at Dungeon World.
But if you want a lesson in RPG history, this is an interesting read, just as a point of comparison against other games.
